Using Twitch to Watch My Livestreams

Twitch is a website that lets me play music in my apartment, and share it live with whoever wants to watch. Any time I'm playing, you can go to twitch.tv/jwghaller on your computer, phone, or tablet, to tune in.

You don't need to create a Twitch account to watch me perform, but having an account does have some advantages:

  • If you have an account, you can type comments into the chat area to the right of the video, and I and the other people watching the stream will see them and can respond to them.
  • If you click the 'Follow' button on my Twitch page, then you will be automatically notified whenever I go live.

Creating a Twitch account is unfortunately a little complicated, but here's how you do it on your computer. The procedure might be a little different if you try to sign up from your phone.

  1. Go to twitch.tv and click on the purple 'Sign Up' button in the upper right corner of the screen.
  2. The next page will ask you for various pieces of information:
    • Username: This is the 'name' people will see your comments in the chat area as coming from. Use some version of your real name, or whatever else you want! It must only contain numbers and letters.
    • Password: This must be at least ten characters.
To prevent someone else from guessing your password and taking over your account, twitch will tell you to use a different password if it thinks the one you picked would be too easy to figure out, so avoid using common words, dates, or other passwords that someone might be able to guess easily.
    • Date of Birth: This is to verify that you are old enough to have a twitch account.
    • Phone number: Twitch will send you a text to verify that you want the account to be created. If you don't want to give Twitch your number, click 'Use email instead' and give them your email address.
  3. At this point, you will be taken to a page that asks you to type in a code to verify that you're really you. If you check your text messages or email, you should see the message containing the code that you need to enter here.
  4. You will now see a big button asking you to tell it your interests. If you want to skip this, then click the button, and then click on the 'x' in the upper right corner of the 'What are you interested in?' box that opens up.

Your account has now been created!

Once you have an account, you can watch and comment on my Twitch streams on your computer, phone, or tablet by going to twitch.tv/jwghaller/. There are also Twitch apps for phones and tablets, if you prefer to use an app.

If you're using an app, then you will be asked to log in when you start the app up. After logging in, Twitch will normally send you a new message via text or email to confirm that you're who you say you are. Type or paste the confirmation code into the app and you should be good to go.

If you access Twitch via the web, then check the upper right corner of the page to see whether you're logged in. If there's a 'Log In' button, then you will need to log in, in order to comment. As above, Twitch will send you a code to confirm that you are who you say you are.
